I hired someone with a disability before and they did not work out so I don’t feel comfortable doing so again. I feel like there is stigma around people with disabilities, and that stigma has led me to think that people with disabilities won’t perform as well as a non-disabled person might It seems complicated hiring someone with a disability because they might call in a lot or need adaptions Because I don’t know a lot about hiring someone with a disability, I fear I might do something wrong and face potential legal implications I’m not even sure where to start. It is such new territory for me! I don’t know much about disabilities and I am afraid of insulting someone accidentally so I would rather just avoid it altogether I don’t know what my rights are and what their rights are I don’t know what I am allowed to ask in an interview I don’t find there are any challenges in hiring people with disabilities! Having somebody in person (or Zoom) so I can ask more specific questions about hiring/retaining people with disabilities within my business Having a specialist come on to help get the individual started Having a specialist come on and help with Ergonomic adaptions for someone who tells me they have a disability Having a specialist lead me to where I can find information about labour laws and legal rights Have a specialist to consult with on how to customize, adapt or restructure positions. Having an updated community resource list for when I can see my staff are struggling with such things as disability related barriers, mental health, or personal issues.
